Apostille (ah-po-steel) is French for "certification". Individuals who travel abroad to live, conduct business, or for education may be asked at some point to have documents Apostilled or Autheticated by the US State Department or Local issuing authority. This service is to seamlessly sends the results of one's fingerprint-based background check from an FBI Departmental order to the State Department in order to get the results of the criminal history report from the FBI authenticated (or Apostilled) by the US State Department and then mailed back to you. You may then send your Apostilled criminal history report (or Identity History Summary) to the country or agency requesting this document be authenticated. Countries that are part of the "Hauge convention" require VISA applicants, some travelers, foreign students, and foreign workers to have their FBI report apostilled before they can enter the country. If you're planning to travel or work in a foreign country you may require an FBI authenticated report of your criminal history summary (and lack there of any criminal history) This service is often referred to as an: FBI Apostille FBI Authentication Apostille for FBI Reports Put another way, the US State Department needs to authenticate and return to you a stamped original copy of a fingerprint-based background check so that you may send it to the country requesting it. All Hauge convention countries for FBI Apostilles will accept the authenticated criminal history report that this US State Department Apostille provides. Currently the US State Department is advertising the average turn around time as 7-10 weeks in order to complete this service.
